To Know God, Look to Jesus

(The following is the October 14 devotional from my Next Step Devotions book. Before reading it, I suggest you read Hebrews 1 and pay close attention to verses 1-4.)

Do you want to know who God is? Look to Jesus. Of all the ways God spoke to humankind throughout history, Jesus Christ is the ultimate revelation of who God is because he is God in the flesh.

Hebrews says of Christ: “Long ago God spoke to the fathers by the prophets at different times and in different ways. In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe through him. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (vv. 1-3).

Albert Mohler notes from these verses that Christ is: the Son of God, the revelation of God, the fulfillment of God’s revelation in the Old Testament, the heir of all things, the agent of creation, the radiance of God’s glory, the expression of God’s nature, the preserver of all creation, the purifier of God’s people, and the mediator of God’s people. Mohler adds, “Let us treasure him, our Creator and Redeemer. He is worthy, for he is supreme over all things.” *

How tragic when people worldwide look in the wrong places for God. When people follow other faiths, they miss the Son, the radiance of God’s glory. When people claim to be spiritual and seek connections with an impersonal universe, they fail to encounter the exact representation of God’s nature in Christ. How sad when people practically worship the natural world yet fail to recognize the one who made nature for his glory and our good.

We can’t understand all that God is, but we can learn what he has revealed about himself by looking to Jesus.

Next Step:

Read Hebrews 1 from a Bible that includes Old Testament references for quotations. Read the Old Testament verses quoted in Hebrews 1.
